Banana Flower Thoran

Thoran is the name of of a dish with many variations, it’s made in every home in Kerala. The way of making it and the base ingredients are the same, you just choose the main ingredients - usually a vegetable of some sort.  Probably the one you happen to have at home. It could be carrots, beetroot, green-beans etc.

One of my favourite is Mussel Thoran, I will post that another day when it’s season for mussels.

We  have a couple of banana trees in our garden so when we have a flower we do a Banana Flower Thoran.

Soooo Keralan 💕🌴

Ingredients:

1 banana flower finely chopped

1 one big red onion, (or the type of onion u have at home).

3 cloves of garlic

1 green chilli

1 pinch of turmeric powder

1 tee spoon of mustard seeds

1 pinch of whole seeds of cumin

1 pinch of Hari’s Garam Masala (or whatever you want to experiment with…)

5-10 curry leaves

1 dl grated coconut

1 pinch of salt

Cooking Instructions

🍌Pour some good coconut oil in a frying pan, pop the mustard seeds.

Throw in about 10 curry leaves, garlic and the onion and the green chilli, put some salt, stir around a little bit.

Add the final chopped banana flower and the spices, fry for some time.

At last minute you add the grated coconut meat…

Voila!!!!

Today we served it with the fish of today, fried in butter salt and pepper and some Tapioka Keralan style.
